Why I don’t Celebrate Halloween

My husband and I have conversations about the important stuff. One conversation (about whether our children should celebrate Halloween) stands out. Indulging seemed harmless at the time, given that we celebrated this tradition and our parents before us. In our ignorance, we allowed it (for a season). We went to places we thought were safe, like their elementary school or the homes of trusted friends. We laughed about the irony of people wanting to live, yet so proudly dressing up like the walking dead. Eventually, we stopped participating all together. Did our kids miss out on something big? No. The bible is clear, “let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father (Matt 5:16).”  But, when we conform to the world (dressed like witches, ghouls, or American idols) we do not encourage reverence for our creator. The word of YHWH warns us:

“Beware lest any man spoil you with philosophy and vein deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of this world, and not of Christ (Colossians 2:8, KJV).”

Yes, our children cared more about getting candy than dressing like the supernatural. But, Halloween is not just another opportunity to have “fun.” By awakening the spirit of fear, divination, or indulgent desires, we walk around uncovered. It’s by no accident that some of the more popular Halloween traditions are reminiscent of witchcraft, seances, and covenants with principalities. For the presence of God doesn’t rest among the demonic. The true intent of this tradition is to invoke the unfruitful works of darkness. You may have unknowingly partook of a few yourself: carving Jack-lanterns in the vein of “Stingy Jack” or wearing masks to go unseen by lost souls as described by Grannan (2017).

The pagan practices of Halloween don’t stop there. I encourage you to research other common themes. From old fashioned trick-or-treating and apple bobbing, to fear inducing skeletons, you’ll find unsettling truths. If you knew the origins of these traditions, you’d probably think twice about embracing this day. For one, the spirit we allow to flourish on this night contradicts the word of God. The truth is revealed in the rituals we observe. There’s gruesome masks, devilish creatures, and witches brew. Even if your intent isn’t to honor a demonic entity, the atmosphere is thick with the presence of Babylon. People around the world are trespassing into the spiritual realms through demonic forces. Biblically speaking, our celebrations should be rooted in the word. If we participate in Halloween, are we truly set apart? Would it be more fruitful to glorify YHWH through prayer, fasting and sharing the good news?

Although a spirit of wickedness wasn’t at the heart of our intention to celebrate Halloween, we couldn’t ignore the disturbing occult roots. It doesn’t make a difference whether you call it “Dia De Los Muertos,” “All Hallows Eve,” or “Samhain.” These days are meant to honor the dead. But, YHWH, is the God of the living?  I know the fancy costumes and artistry of it all feel so harmless. But, it only further conceals the truth. The righteousness of Christ is not revealed through the traditions of men. Especially, not on Halloween. As a believer, I choose not to fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness (Ep 5:11). I’d rather learn the character that pleases God and live accordingly. I can enjoy life without dimming my spiritual light. The word is consistent, unwavering. When it’s in my heart, I’m prepared to clearly discern the will of God.
